Weird, a blowout win for football? 38-7, Aggies.

Let's start off with the stat of the game: 27 yards allowed by USU's defense in the 2nd half!

That is insane!!!

Utah State came out swinging once again with a six-play, 51-yard touchdown drive. Then after allowing a l4-play, 63-yard drive by Texas State, Will Davis put an end to that with an interception in the end zone. USU only needed five plays to go 80 yards for another score.

The Aggies had six possessions in the first half, five of them for touchdowns. 35-0 at half, game already in hand.

SECOND HALF
I'm not going to worry about this at all. The offense had already built an insurmountable lead and all that was left to do was to keep the fancy stuff off the film reel and get the second unit some reps. And they accomplished both of those in the second half.

It wasn't pretty, and maybe it would have been nice to see Chuckie Keeton get a sixth or seventh touchdown, but it got the job done. And when your defense is allowing absolutely NOTHING, at least outside of a couple yards when the Bobcats picked off a pass deep in USU territory resulting in their only score of the game.

IN SUMMATION...
The Aggies haven't had to get crazy with the offense or defense for a month now. We saw them put up points in bunches and rack up crazy sack totals in the last big game we knew we had to play big to win at San Jose State. Since then, it seems like the playbook has been pretty largely closed on both sides of the ball. I can only presume that is to keep from giving Louisiana Tech much to work with when prepping for USU.

Given that La Tech has had at least a tiny bit of troubles the last two weeks, that's encouraging for the big match-up for the last WAC title in two weeks. UTSA was hanging with the Bulldogs until late in that game, and while it ended up looking like a blowout, La Tech had its starters in until the very end, including the last touchdown with just seconds remaining to run up the score.

That game has gotten a whole lot more interesting in the past couple weeks.

NOTES
  • Yardage totals: USU - 593, Texas State - 158.... WOW!!!
  • Matt Austin played a fantastic game, getting a touchdown catch and making a few more big plays.
  • The rest of the receivers were pretty great too, especially with Cam Webb having another solid game.

  • JoJo Natson finally got himself a touchdown too when he managed to sneak under every defender's line of sight to get a whole corner of the end zone all to himself.
  • Five touchdowns in the first half by Chuckie Keeton. Four through the air and one on the ground... Unreal. Not a good second half, but you kind of give yourself that luxury of not needing to do much in the second half when you build up a 35-0 lead.
  • Kerwynn Williams had another 100-yard rushing game, but somehow didn't make it into the end zone. Still, great to see him get over 1,000 yards for the season!
  • Also great to see seemingly every USU football player who has a Twitter giving a shout-out to Williams for reaching 1,000 after the game was over. Gotta love a team that is all looking out for each other like that!
  • Will Davis gets a pick for the third game in a row, two of them coming in the end zone. THAT is clutch defense right there!

Player of the Game: The offensive line

They gave Keeton time, they gave the running backs room and they helped put the game out of reach by halftime. Also it was very cool of Rob Flygare to give congrats to Kerwynn Williams AND the offensive line when K-Dub broke the 1,000 yard mark. Huge ups to every one of Jamie Markosian, Tyler Larsen, the brothers Whimpey and the one and only Eric Schultz!!!

I haven't laughed so hard in weeks!

  2. I hate to beat a dead horse, but we're getting killed on the radio here in Salt Lake for the lack of attendance at the last couple of games. They had Gary on DJ and PK (1280) and he seemed embarrassed. What's it going to take to pack the house every week? Three winning seasons? Four?
