Basketball recruiting picking up for USU

With only one senior on this year's basketball roster and already three players locked in from the fall signing class, most everyone had assumed the Aggies were done recruiting for the 2013 class.

Not so fast though...

Last week, Stew Morrill got another commitment for the 2013 class, and then another over this weekend for the 2014 recruiting class. So let's run down what we know so far!

JOJO MCGLASTON - 6'4 shooting guard

Rumor had it before the New Mexico State game that the coaching staff wanted this guy pretty badly. Described by one person as a smaller Kyisean Reed, McGlaston is a stud athlete who can get way up in the air and shoot the deep ball. He's got a quick highlight reel here that you should see.

Someone with his athleticism should be able to score the ball in a handful of ways, but maybe more importantly, become a lockdown defender. If nothing else, he appears to be in the mold of the kinds of athletes that Utah State will want as the Aggies move to the Mountain West next year.

And if his comments to Kyle Goon are any indication, this kid already has the perfect attitude to have playing for Stew. Gotta love when someone is willing to put their game in Stew's hands, because we've seen more than enough of a sample size to know that if guys buy in to Stew, they're going to get a hell of a lot better.

McGlaston will be a true freshman next season, and given the depth on the wings, should be an easy choice to redshirt.

WILLIE MANGUM - 6'1 shooting guard

With seven juniors on this season's roster, the 2014 recruiting class is going to be big, the lone commit of that class so far is planning on a mission, so for guys looking to step right in, things are still wide open... or at least they were.

Willie Mangum reportedly committed to USU over the weekend, which would appear to add some serious scoring punch in a couple years. Mangum is currently a freshman in junior college, averaging just under 21 points per game at Western Nebraska Community College. For a JUCO freshman, that's a pretty excellent point total, even if his shooting percentages leave a bit to be desired. That's something that has time to improve, and if it does, the Aggies will be in good shape.

Not a whole lot is known about Mangum, but his Rivals.com profile lists a few very good programs as having had interest in him coming out of high school. UNLV, Virginia Commonwealth, and Baylor are among those teams. And with the likelihood that both Jalen Moore and Jojo McGlaston redshirt next season, having a junior like Mangum to keep the two freshman fighting hard for minutes can only help.
