sNOOOOOOOOOw!!!!!! This was the field at kickoff time. Kudos to Scott Barnes for grabbing a shovel (literally, he did). |
What maybe is most impressive about this is that for the majority of the game, the Aggies were trailing by two scores. But when crunch time came about, Adam Freaking Kennedy (AFK) locked the offense down and was again making all the right reads and all the right throws downfield. That Turbin kid wasn't too shabby either.
The five turnovers are a little bit upsetting, especially since Stanley Morrison pitched in three of those in about two minutes time. And it's really too bad because outside of that, Morrison had a pretty good game. I don't think I'm the only one who had "WTF" run through my head when Morrison was USU's quarterback for a big chunk of the second half, but they were moving the ball pretty efficiently for that little bit. The experiment basically ended after the Morrison fumble though.
In the Dave Baldwin department, today was pretty encouraging. The shots downfield from the offense kept up just like they did in the 2nd half of Hawaii, and once again they were connecting. AFK's 21-for-27 passing for 255 yards is going to put you in position to win every time. Giving the ball to No. 6 a total of 22 times will always help that cause too. Outside of AFK's play, even taking the chance on the Morrison experiment was a good call in my book. Things needed to be shaken up.
There was still one instance of Michael Smith up the middle on 3rd-and-short, followed up by an option run on 4th down that a kindergartener could have read pre-snap. That was one drive sabotage though, out of many. Well played today Baldwin.
For Bill Busch, I'm still scratching my head as to why Chuck Jacobs got yanked from the kick returner spot after two great returns early on, only to get plugged back in later. Sure, the mistake was corrected, but Jacobs looked perfectly comfortable in that role to start off. Minus the oopsie later on where he tried to switch directions eight times (which I expect to be coached out of him ASAP), Jacobs looked like that job should be his the rest of the year.
Then there was Matt Austin, who was fully in Matt Austin mode all game. Everytime the team needed a big catch, he was making it, including the game-winner.
Most of all, win two of the last three and the Utah State Aggies are bowl eligible.
Player of the Game: Matt Austin
