Like it or not, it's a rivalry now

Nobody at BYU cares about playing Utah State, eh?
For generations now, BYU fans have written off Utah State as something of insignificance, relentlessly claiming that Utah State vs. BYU is not a rivalry. And once upon a time, given the several decade long slump of USU football, they had at least a basis for argument.

But regardless of primary rivalries (Which in this state is between the Utes and Cougars, as much as 54-10 would beg to dissuade anyone from believing that's as close as it used to be), any in-state match-up matters when its two teams at the same level of the NCAA. When BYU and Utah play, it's a rivalry. When Utah State and BYU play, it's a rivalry. When any of the above and Weber State play (in basketball at least, because of the whole "same level" thing), it's a rivalry!

To be the pretentious assholes that look at every game outside of BYU/Utah and say you don't care about this other in-state school, yet you agonize at the idea of losing them, that makes you... well... a pretentious asshole. And chances are if you look in the mirror, you'll see a Y-logo looking back at you.

This is about Utah State and BYU though, which to most people with any common sense, officially became a rivalry back in 2006 when BYU made it known that they were refusing to come play in Logan the following season. It was the epitome of a bitch move on their part. Then when the series finally resumed in the 2008-09 season with a neutral court game at Energy Solutions Arena, BYU fans attributed their lack of student body attendance to the game on their lack of caring about playing Utah State, even though their team had clearly shown that they take the Aggies seriously. So when the premiere BYU homer himself, Dick Harmon, wrote about how badly Aggie fans showed up Cougar fans, that wasn't a lack of caring, it was just a simple case of one schools fans kind of sucking.

Then, just more than a month ago, any credibility left for BYU fans claiming that there is no rivalry with USU was laid to rest when their fans flooded the field at Lavell Edwards Stadium after their football team pulled off an impressive comeback victory over the Aggies. It was the second straight game between USU and BYU where the home fans rushed the field at the end of the game. That kind of stuff only happens in rivalries.

Yet BYU fans still try and claim they don't care. They still try to act like Utah State is nothing to them. But actions speak louder than words. If they're going to refuse to play basketball at The Spectrum like they did, and if they're going to rush their football field after beating USU, and if they're going to bring 1,500 hits to this website in a matter of hours from their cougarboard thread, IT'S A RIVALRY!!!

There's only one group of fans who are capable of being as big of douchebags as to still try and deny that after all they've done to indicate a rivalry, and that is just one of so many reasons why everybody hates BYU.

You may now proceed to tell me how classless I am.

  1. Dude. Relax. We rushed th field because we just went 99 yads in 1 minute, with our backup qb, and got atipped pass to win the game. 1 win in19 years is NOT a rivalry. Case in point, if usu was playing at byu this Friday, you wouldn't see a tent ANYWERE on BYU campus. Keep trying though. Hey maybe u guys can take our old spot in the mwc.

  2. if that was the only way byu kids were going to get a seat I know they would camp out. Oh and it was 96 yards, I know I was there. Most of my friends who are byu fans wanted to know how to get tickets to the game, because they do care. USU just knows how to take it to the next level of fandom.

  3. This is such a weird sore spot with Aggies.

BYU has too many schools that consider themselves a rival. Utah, Wyoming, SDSU, Hawaii, etc. The list is long.

So yeah, BYU is never going to care as much as USU does about the rivalry.

But BYU will always care a little, so cheer up.

In the mean time, it might be nice if Disco Stew scheduled a few more teams that are as good as BYU. USU's strength of schedule only gets worse by the year. It might break 200 this year! I can't believe Aggies aren't a little more up in arms about it. At this rate, you guys might go undefeated and still not make the tournament.

  4. Heads up, dude: That picture isn't from this year. It isn't even from a BYU-Utah State game. It's from the 2009 BYU-Utah overtime game in Provo. You can tell because the BYU players are wearing royal blue jerseys, which they only wore for that game and the 2009 Las Vegas Bowl.

    Accuracy FTW?

  5. Dearest byu fans,
Why are you on our web site if you "don't care." you are the most classless university. People hate you because you think your shit don't stink. You have a lot of shit and it stinks like a fat mans ass. This is why everyone in the nation hates you. And the people you hate the most equal your rival. I just don't know how byu likes being hated so much. It's like you're proud of it.
Next, your backup qb is way better then your previous starting qb heaps. Why do you think he's starting now?
First time ever someone stormed the field after beating an unranked 1-3 team. Like I said. Lots of class.
Also, your students couldn't camp out. There precious Honor code wouldn't let them. They end up worse off then Davies last year.

  6. I hate to say this, but the BYU fans actually make a little bit of sense. It depends on your definition of the word rival. Most people would agree that in-state teams are automatic rivals. But it's also true that RIVALRY=EQUALITY +DISLIKE. USU has always disliked BYU, but now the teams are competitive. It's the perfect recipe for a rivalry. BYU-USU is becoming a true rivalry (In terms of equality) in football again. Storming the field is proof of that. But, you don't just storm the field any time you beat your rival. Only on the most special of occasions. Like when it's the first time in 17 years, or when your back-up QB comes of the bench, drives 96 yards, makes ugly but somehow-successful completions and scores the game winning touchdown. It wasn't just because they won, it was also how they won. They could have beat San Jose State in the same manner and they may have stormed the field. The rivalry was only part of the equation for storming the field.
